Biofeedback: Train Your Body

Biofeedback is a process that enables an individual to learn how to change physiological activity for the purposes of improving health and performance. Precise instruments measure physiological activity such as brainwaves, heart function, breathing, muscle activity, and skin temperature. These instruments rapidly and accurately “feed back” information to the user. The presentation of this information — often in conjunction with changes in thinking, emotions, and behavior — supports desired physiological changes. Over time, these changes can endure without continued use of an instrument.1

This can be a confusing subject! Bearing that in mind, here’s the quickest summary of how it applies to tinnitus.

The “desired physiological change” is the ultimate goal of your biofeedback treatment. In our case, this is training yourself to have the ability to maintain a relaxed state of mind despite the ringing in your ears. You’ve heard many times that tinnitus is aggravated by stress and anxiety. And you already know how stressful this condition can be. But here’s where there is this huge ray of hope. This doesn’t have to be a catch-22! It’s not an endless cycle! With biofeedback a medical professional is going to be able to see the digital interpretation of what your stress looks like and what happens -step by step -each time you begin to feel stressed. Maybe when you start to stress out you start clenching up your body, increasing your blood-pressure, contributing to the feeling of tenseness. This is fine, you can’t fight what naturally happens, but when you know what’s going on and why and when, you can choose to let your body clench up like you’re used to, but just for a moment. Perhaps count to ten, then one by one start un-clenching your muscles. This is just one example. Biofeedback treatment is extensive, spanning over several sessions. The reward, however, is ten-fold. You will discover after treatment that you are the master of your own body. From that point on, the ringing in your ears will no longer seem like this uncontrollable “snowballing-effect” that just causes itself to get worse with its own gravity. It will be something you can deal with internally, using relaxing techniques that only your own body can tell you. Biofeedback is like your body writing a book as you read it, with a trained professional by your side as an interpreter.

Millions suffer from tinnitus and you can share with them your stories. You can tell them what has worked for you and what hasn’t, and you can find out what has worked for others.  Here is a list of networks you can join for free.
